Castlerock Golf Club: A Premier Links Experience on Northern Ireland’s Scenic Coastline
Established
Castlerock Golf Club was established in 1901.
Course Layout
The course consists of 18 holes, designed with the traditional characteristics of a links course—undulating fairways, strategic bunkering, and natural hazards, with the sea winds adding to the challenge. The course has a par of 71, with a total length of 6,691 yards from the championship tees.
Location & Conditions
Castlerock Golf Club is situated along the Causeway Coast, one of the most picturesque and dramatic coastlines in Northern Ireland. The club is close to the Atlantic Ocean, offering spectacular views of the sea and surrounding natural landscapes As a links course, Castlerock is strongly influenced by the weather and coastal winds. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean means the course experiences frequent changes in conditions, with wind playing a major role in how the course plays
Course Overview
Castlerock Golf Club is located in County Londonderry, on the north coast of Northern Ireland, in an area renowned for its natural beauty and stunning coastal scenery.
Proximity to Major Landmarks:
- Giant’s Causeway: One of Northern Ireland’s most famous landmarks, the Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just a short drive away. The natural geological formations of the Causeway, with its distinctive hexagonal basalt columns, are a popular tourist attraction in the area.
- Derry/Londonderry: The historic city of Derry, also known as Londonderry, is approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) to the west of the club. The city is famous for its medieval city walls and rich history.
- Belfast: The capital city of Northern Ireland, Belfast, is about 60 miles (97 kilometers) to the southeast, making Castlerock accessible for both local and international visitors.
- In 1925, the club employed Ernest W. W., a prominent golf course designer of the era, to make improvements to the course. Under his guidance, several holes were reshaped, and bunkering was updated to create a more challenging layout.
- W. W.’s modifications improved the course’s strategic elements, particularly with regard to the natural coastal winds and the use of hazards, which continue to challenge golfers today.
Further Renovations – 1990s:
- In the 1990s, Castlerock underwent a significant renovation to bring the course up to modern standards while preserving its traditional links character. The course was updated by David Feherty, a renowned golfer and course designer.
- Feherty’s work focused on enhancing the bunkering and improving the flow of the course while maintaining the natural beauty of the land and preserving the challenge posed by the coastal winds and dunes.
